Over the past few months, it's been clear that balance updates have been made with the intention of promoting offensive play. Monks have slowly, but repeatedly nerfed, while damage has been steadily increased across the board. Unfortunately it's gone too far, and play is becoming more and more defensive. Almost any team you look at has 3 defensive players, and most have a 4th with some skills devoted to defense. 2 Monks can no longer keep a team alive.

It seems odd to think buffing defense would help offence, but think of it this way: offence just got buffed, but it still takes the same amount of "offence" to kill someone. You can do one of two things:

  • You can keep your current setup, taking advantage of your buffed offence, and hope your defense can offset the other team's improved offence.
  • You can sacrifice some of you offence, since you don't need as much, for more defense.

Most teams will opt for the first, but after so many buffs to offence, it's simply no longer possible. We've reached a point where the only option is the second. Instead of two monks, teams now run monks, a weapons rit, and 1 or 2 characters with blind.

Party-wide heals are now a virtual non-factor. Prots no longer reduce a significant amount of damage. It's simply not possible for monks to keep the party alive for an extended period against the overpowering amounts of damage teams now output.

If the intention is to make the game more offence oriented, then the solution is to buff the defense. If teams don't NEED the weapons rit, they won't bring it.

So how to buff defense? Make prots reduce a significant amount of damage. Give monks some form of energy management, or self defense, so they don't have to choose one or the other. In other words, make it so 2 monks at least have a chance of keeping the party alive.
