When ground targeting skills with the mouse, I've noticed that the circle turns red when the player moves the mouse beyond the maximum distance the skill can be used. Now while this solution is good, it isn't most practical in a scenario when someone just wants to use a skill as soon as possible and as far as it can be used. In the heat of battle, the player has to search that last "green spot" on the ground with the mouse and this can take time, especially because it seems that spells do not activate, when someone tries to use them while the circle is out of range.
My suggestion is this. When someone crosses the maximum distance with the mouse, the green circle could stay on the border instead of turning red and continuing to follow the mouse. At this point, it can "travel" on this border left and right relative to the mouse, which is now somewhere beyond the maximum range of the skill. This system improves on three things:
- The player can now use the skill without failing, no matter if they went too far with the mouse
- It helps enormously when the player has to use a ground targeted skill far away, without searching the maximum distance
- The action can be executed much faster
