Summary

Players completing Quests or Dungeons for the second time have their performance measured, scored, and recorded, earning trophies they can display to other players.

NOTE: This is a general post, I will update it latter with the actual design mechanisms I have made for it so far.

The top place scorers for a Quest or a Dungeon earn their place as the current high scorer among all records on the server, earning them a trophy item they posses only as long as they hold the title. Only players replaying the event are included in the scoring calculation, other first time players are likewise completing the event, but ideally won’t lower the score for repeat players. Scores and ranks are given among the scoring group for player enjoyment even if no new record is set. If the top scorer in a group wins the top score on the board for that event, the current trophy owner will be informed, and after a countdown, the trophy will transfer to the new winner. Both players will be aware of the name of the other player for the sake of competition. The Score Board UI will show the current top records and statistics on each Quest and Dungeon in a familiar and intelligent UI. Finally, the current participation based rewards system can act as the foundation for the Scoring system as well. The scoring system will however need to factor in significant measures of skill such as avoiding damage, supporting allies, and fast completion.

Philosophy

Guild Wars 2 is innovating to make back-tracking in the quest and dungeon events enjoyable compared to other MMOs, but has not yet made them any more rewarding than they would have been the first time through. The Scoring system accomplishes this by building a new community element that encourages players to use optimal tactics in their battles. Often you can complete an entire MMO’s quest catalog without ever feeling challenged enough to use the same skilled play styles required in the dungeons or PVP. The Scoring system counters that by allowing players to test their skills against others on the fly, essentially anywhere in the game. Likewise, it is a constant reminder of areas yet explored or of content you enjoyed during your first run through. This enhanced awareness and challenge is a natural motivator for replay, extending the middle and end game without significant development beyond the scoreboard. The guild members can attribute their victories to a specific guild, adding their accomplishment to their guild’s thus allowing the scoreboard to support things like guild strength and prestige. Guilds themselves would then be large proponents of replay through the scoreboard, often planning teams to go and seek out new trophies for their guild.

Future Phases

The scoring system allows for special head to head scoring events to take place, offering a form of competition other than PVP. This adds a new flavor to the competitive gaming culture behind Guild Wars 2, a significant aspect of its past and future.
