There should be a temporary one time use type of bonus skill awarded to players for different actions performed in the game. Similar to the call of duty series' multi-kill bonus system where carpet bombs and attack helicopters are rewarded. A similar system can reward skilled players, deter poor game play tactics, and help beginning players.
To create a more interactive environment, perhaps players can performs different tasks to cause weather changes and environmental impacts. For example - If a river was dammed up, the area that was once a part of the river would dry up and vegetation would reduce eventually in a long time advance cause the area to turn into a dessert and cause reduction in moisture accumulation and precipitation. On the other hand, where the water was diverted to and perhaps more trees and vegetation were extra supplemented, an accelerated rain forest type of environment could develop causing an excess amount of precipitation to accumulate. These are just some examples. Perhaps tectonic plates could be shifted causing earth quakes and shifts in continental divides. Mountains then could also be formed. And as a natural world type, volcanoes can erupt causing environmental changes. Maybe a day of Armageddon can come too...
Each race can have more of a unique feel by having relic items and landmarks left behind by their ancestors. Perhaps these relics and landmarks had specific uses and some may even special powers. These items could be protected by religious sects and different entities sworn to protect them. These items could also be symbolic items such as a kings crown or a grand wizards staff for example. Or a regional leaders sword of might could signify a races strength and dominance of ones nation among other dominion nations to show possession of strength against other races. Maybe that sort of a thing. It could also build into the lore of guild wars too.
Well that's all the suggestion that comes to mind right now.. hehe.
