Having watched several Guild Wars 2 combat videos I have noticed that (mostly - 1 noticeable exception) shadows are only cast from objects lit by a static light source, spells - and torches if I remember correctly - do not cast shadows. A good example of this is this video. Although some spells do cast light, there are no shadows created from the light, as if it just goes 'straight through' characters and scenery.
This may be due to game engine constraints or may take too much time to implement for a small gain in visual effects and/or performance hit, but I feel it would make combat, especially for spell-casting classes, that much more 'real' and add more atmosphere to the game - especially in dark locations. Obviously the shadows could be disabled in video options, and possibly a slider to specify how many lights were allowed to cast dynamic shadows in a scene at any one time to account for a broad range of video cards.
