After reading a recent blog post on WvW siege weapons, I decided that PBAoE defensive siege weapons could be fun and useful.

I am suggesting creating secondary siege weapons that can be built around the primary siege weapons. These would defend the primary siege weapons from attack.

Let's say you are a group of five players that want to make a significant contribution to your server's failed attempt at a siege at a major keep. This opposing team's main strength is a group of experienced players that really like to sprint out of a side gate of their keep and run around in a circle to destroy siege weapons and scatter opposing forces. In order to prevent this, you begin the construction of a trebuchet (hmm... having some siege weapons that are mobile would be fun) at a proper distance. Soon after, you begin digging a spike trap right next to it (costing more supply), to trap any would-be saboteurs or scavengers. When the marauders show up and rush the unfinished siege weapon, a few of their players unwittingly fall into the spike trap and are damaged/crippled/incapacitated, leaving the rest of the group more vulnerable, and balancing the fight.

Or maybe you are a ranger/thief hiding in the woods by a path the enemy frequents. So you pull out a small wire, and tie it between two tree trunks, and then conceal yourself in the nearby bushes and wait for an enemy to run past and get KD'd/damaged so you can quickly dispatch them.

Other possible siege defenses could include:

  1. Ramparts
  2. Trenches (which could provide significant damage reduction of ranged attacks)
  3. Bonfires (which would require manual triggering)
  4. Falling Trees
  5. Snares

The purpose of these would be to enhance the strategic diversity of WvW and promote more tactics.
