In Guild Wars classic each character class has it's own unique "footstep" sound effect. Necromancers, for example, make the sound of lightly booted footsteps when walking around. This is generally OK, except for when they use scar pattern footwear.

Making the footstep sound effect a property of each type of footwear would (hopefully without much work) provide just a little bit of extra immersion.
