Everyone loved doing /dance in the original game, with plenty of Guilds coming together to do massive synchronized dances (far more fun and impressive before they added the synced dance by the way). I think everyone was fully expecting that /dance would return for GW2, and that was confirmed in the BWE by one of the developers.
I had an idea for a way to improve it though...
Basically, it would work as follows.
1. /dance would activate a default dance animation based on race, profession, etc.
2. While dancing, your entire skill-bar is replaced with new skills. Dance skills.
3. F1/F2/F3/F4 all activate modifiers that change the style of dance (Break-dancing, waltzing, ballet, etc.).
4. The dancing minigame is about chaining together dance moves, utilizing the full range of skills.
I suppose it could be implemented with the same experience system from the rest of the game(start out with only a couple dance moves, but as you use the skills more and more become unlocked), but it is not important. Also, I suppose it could be implemented with Chain Skills (one single "skill" having a chain of dance moves within it).
Basically, doing this would turn /dance into a far more complex system that uses already existing game mechanics in a new way. I imagine it could be a way of earning money too, since people could dance in major cities then have people send them messages with gold(mail system seems perfect for that).
You could also see Guilds coming together with complicated choreography and customized dances. I hope we never see a /dance Guild, but I suppose that would be possible...
People could also come up with new dances then share them online so that other people could try to perform them. Imagine, a PvX Wiki style website with a subsection for dances.
It would just be a fun way to turn /dance into a really fun minigame and distraction for when you don't want to be questing but you still want to be engaged in the game. Naturally, it wouldn't necessarily change the default dance animations, which I think should remain in the game, but it could be an interesting way of returning that flavor of spontaneous joy that can be had by the community witnessing something amazing(like a crazy 100 person synchronized dance before the " /dance * " functionality was added to the game) and unique.
