Character Emotions[edit]
I read recently that each of the characters in GW2 will have a personal backstory and quest chain and I was really excited. I like to think of my characters backstories and their histories. It led me to think that if my character was a human of Ascalonian desent what would he act like towards the Charr that he comes across in his journeys?
Would he hate all Charr and be reluctant to work alongside one (like Gwen in EoTN) or would he be indifferent to it all. Ascalon and the Charr are still at war in GW2 so it would lead to difficulties arising from a lore point of view if he was merely indifferent. After all would you want to work with someone whose people drove you from your homeland?
I think that people of certain decents should have certain dis-likes and old grudges against other races. The Charr and Ascalonian humans being the obvious ones but what about the Sylvari and the Asura? I think that these old grudges could provide interesting backstories and quests as the characters begin to come to terms with their grudges. Maybe they soften and become to realise that there is a much greater threat (like in EoTN) or will the grudges deepen and become hatred?
Effects on gameplay[edit]
These grudges would provide background for the character and would make the characters more interesting. If the character hates another race maybe his/her skills and spells take 1/2 second less time to cast against that race but 1/2 longer to recharge? This could represent his/her eagerness to cause hurt but the recklessness causes the skill to be rushed and messed up slightly. It could be the other way round for understanding the race and sympathising with it. You could swap the recharge time/cast time with energy or maybe a small health sacrifice.
Conclusion[edit]
These emotions could be dictated by choices in the personal storyline. Such as do you let these human prisoners go after you have captured them? If you do you become more sympathetic and your grudge softens. Or do you keep them in captivity and your hatred grows?
I think that this is something that you should look into and maybe use it to expand the game. I wish you the best of luck with GW2 and I am looking forward to it.
