Templates are awesome. They save players from having to recreate skills and equipment over and over and over again, and that's definitely something to be thankful for.
The one thing about templates, though, is that you can have a lot of them. A LOT of them - hundreds or thousands, depending on the player. And any time you've got that many of something, you've got to keep them organized if you hope to be able to find anything.
Now, you can already do this to some degree by naming templates in an organized manner (for example, the build loaded on my Mesmer right now is named "MeE - RA - Migraine (glyph, general)", and all of my templates are named like that). Naming conventions only go so far, though: with each paramater, it becomes necessary to sort through more and more information. For example, "MeW - RA - Migraine (bonetti's, general)" would be a good distance away from an almost identical build with a different secondary!
In fact, as more categories are added, name and/or folder searches become less and less effective unless there are multiple copies of each template named to reflect every way one would search for them (and that would be ridiculous).
So, to improve this, I suggest (1) adding a bit of depth to the template parameters that allow players to attach more information to them and (2) creating a form that allows users to search for templates based on various criteria.
For example, I might find my Migraine bar by searching for Mesmer bars, or RA bars, or Illusion Magic bars, or Elementalist secondary bars, or bars with Glyph of Lesser Energy on them, or... well, you get the point.
Ideally, users would be able to specify and search by the following parameters:
- Primary Profession
- "Warrior Primary builds"
- "Non-Necromancer Primary builds"
- Secondary Profession
- "Ritualist Secondary builds"
- "Non-Dervish Secondary builds"
- Primary or Secondary Profession
- "Primary or Secondary Monk builds"
- "Non-Primary or Secondary Paragon builds"
- Attribute Levels
- "builds with 12 Communing"
- "builds with more than 10 Strength"
- "builds with less than 5 Healing Prayers"
- Skill Makeup
- "builds with Nightmare Weapon"
- "builds without Dash"
- Usage
- "PvE builds"
- "Farming builds"
- "PvP builds"
- "GvG builds"
- "PvE builds"
This is off the top of my head, so I'm sure you could think of more things that should be on that list.
At any rate, a user should, ideally, be able to specify as many of these as desired and then search for them based on these characteristics. For example, a player could search for "Mo/W RA builds with 11 or higher Healing Prayers, 0 Tactics, and Guardian" and come up with all of their templates that fit. If you've ever used iTunes, take a look at their Smart Playlist feature; think something like that.
I think this would take quite a bit of work, but even if it were just a side project, I believe that it would please many people.
