As an extra element to the mini-games, you could have player created/adjusted mini-games or challenges. Such as the first to get from one location to another without map travel. Or the first to find all the hidden clues. Here are some ideas on how it could work:
1 - The player setting the challenge would supply a Special Challenge Vendor with the reward, or maybe even a few rewards for first, second and third prizes.
2 - The player could set the diffucult and choose from a selection of challenge types.
3 - Once the challenge type is chosen the player would get more options, such as picking locations, typing in/selecting a set of clues to follow, or choosing a creature type and how many to defeat.
4 - The winners of the challenge could get their name announced throughout the area by the Special Challenge Vendor.
5 - Player could vote on challenges they've played, and the player that set the challenge could get a reward if a certain amount of players vote high enough.
Here are a few ideas of some challenges the players could set:
Race Around Town - A race to set locations in a set time. This may require a start timer so enough players can join and get ready in the start location. Players that know the area well could take short cuts, etc.
Treasure Hunt - Following clues to reach a goal. Would be funny if the player could type the clues, though this could cause problems in the form of abusive players.
Pest Control - I know they are trying to stay away from 'Kill X Beasties' type quests, but if the creatures are easy to beat, and its more a race against other players, maybe against the clock also, it would be more fun.
What A Clown - Not sure how this would work, and it would require a player voting system, but the participating challengers are given a set time to make a costume that fits a set theme the closest, using provided items given away for free by the vendor (these would disappear after the challenge has ended), the winner is the one with the most votes.
These are just a few silly ideas for challenges but I'm sure more could be thought up :). Providing the rewards were not too high it should prove to be a fun distraction. Maybe even have titles related to it.
Well I'm not sure if it would be a workable thing to add, but could be fun playing challenges set by other players. Players could organize their own events and such, with a big party after the games have finished :).
