If Players are ever to face against the Elder dragons this should be a really epic event both in size and mechanic. What I have in mind is a Shadow of the Collosus/God of War epicness, where you with a group of adventurers, climb along the Elder dragons body like tiny insects clinging onto a might dinosaur, and occasionally fighting his spawns/guardians that live inside or on the boss itself. If I recall correctly a dragon could barely hide behind a mountain so getting there should be as hard as climbing a particularly nasty mountain that tries to bite you off.
