Gamepad Controller Support
I would very much like for native controller support to be included with the release of GW2. Reasons:
- Controllers allow the player to be in more varied, relaxed positions.
- Myself (and others) are at a keyboard all day; it's harder to relax while playing a game with keyboard and mouse.
- Third party tools to shore up this lack will be vastly inferior in situations that usually require a mouse, such as placing AOE effects.
- Others claim that a controller player can't match the skill of a keyboard-mouse player; this play style isn't forced on anyone, so that is irrelevant. It is a matter of preference.
- ArenaNet developers have stated that combat is more action-oriented. As this appeals to a more general audience, having controller support could bring a larger audience to enjoy their game.
- I invite others to contribute additional benefits ( and concerns to be addressed ).
Ideas and suggestions for implementation. I'm basing my scheme on the 360 controller, as it is most familiar:
- Firstly, the controller need not duplicate ALL functionality of the original UI. I think a proper target, however, would be all functionality required for combat.
- To mimic the behavior of the mouse's cursor, a cursor point should be kept at the middle of the screen. This behavior worked with success in the console version Dragon Age: Origins.
- LB (left shoulder button) - jump
- LT (left shoulder trigger) - toggle between WEAPON skill set and HEAL/UTIL/ELITE skill set
- RB (right should button) - weapon skill 1 OR heal skill
- X (left face button) - weapon skill 2 OR utility skill 1
- A (bottom face button) - weapon skill 3 OR utility skill 2
- B (right face button) - weapon skill 4 OR utility skill 3
- Y (top face button) - weapon skill 5 OR elite skill
- LS (left analog stick) - character movement: walk/run forward/back, strafe left/right
- RS (right analog stick) - camera control and placement of AOE effects
- DPAD (directional pad) - four separate profession-specific options. E.g: switching between weapon sets, activating a different kit (engineer), changing elemental focus (elementalist)
- RSC (right stick "click") - target highlighted foe
I'm sure there's more to combat, but there's still a few more tricks to the controller as well:
- The RT (right trigger) is unused currently, which could server to give the face buttons (and RB) a third function.
- If absolutely necessary, both LT and RT could be pulled to give face buttons (and RB) a fourth function.
- BACK and START buttons are still unused, which could also be multiplexed with LT/RT if needed. Since they're not as easily accessible, it is not preferred.
Please improve, as well as provide more reasons why this should be natively handled. Thank you.
