While the exclusion of mounts may not deter players away from the game it is a nice addition. It's more of a modern MMO tradition to be able to purchase and/or be rewarded mount/s. Other reasons include: to show accomplishment (Level, Gold, quest line or reputation), for appearance, speed buffs and more. Even if it isn't needed it's nice to gloat and say "hey, look what I got".
