(Discussion of this suggestion will lead to my editing of the page)
- A simple request. It is known Flight will not be in game. But:
If Mounts(&Flight) are not Intended[edit]
- Even if Mounts(&Flight) are never going to happen:
- Place code into Guild Wars 2 to have Mounts and Flight, in case down the line ArenaNet decides they want to expand. It is a backup plan just in case, so as not to end up in similar situations of other games that wished to expand, but were limited by their code and lack of foresight.
- For atmosphere, have Mounts available for NPCs only. Cavalry strolling by in game adds to the feel and is pleasing to see.
If Mounts are Possibly Intended[edit]
- If Mounts are coming at some point for Characters:
- Realistic summoning of Mount. Not simply popping out of nowhere and disappearing as well.
- Logical reasons hinted at, or explicitly explained, of why a Mount cannot enter possible restricted zones.
- Possible item pack storage. Possible limited armor covering of Mount model, which is dye-able.
- Realistically being dismounted when hit, to prevent bypassing areas. (The game is built without needing Mounts, so dismount is logical)
- Possible combat options, similar to how using the Environment changes a player's skill set. (Rather not have Mounted combat, as most games do it poorly)
- Mounts are special, so should be somewhat rare. (If game lore describes a "Rare" Mount to seek, but all Characters are seen riding one, it cheapens the supposed "Rarity". However, if game lore describes a Mount to be common, it makes sense to be common)
- If gate travel makes Mount travel pointless:
- Mounts could be an "endgame" status symbol and rare to acquire.
- Instead of entering a common gathering area with everyone on Mounts, only 10-50% of the "endgame" population have one.
- An appropriate "endgame" time sink to acquire. Epic quest chain.
- Mounts could be a vanity item, with no game advantage.
- Possible Exhaustion type feature, where Mount speed decreases to trotting at Character speed.
I do not personally have a preference yet, until I see the game. Quite possibly, Guild Wars 2 will not have any need for Mounts.
For an Expansion, down the road, it would be a shame to later feel the need to have something that can no longer be added(think Flight).
I would hope that if Characters cannot have Mounts, NPCs will.
