  • Festering Deception

Story:

Some unorthodox philosophers might say that history is a living thing, as much as any creature of Tyria. It feeds off the imagination of others to grow forth into legend, excreting lies and deception, while giving birth to other great tales in the form of spin offs and...the other side of the story. Imagine how strange it was when someone, or something, took this concept literally...

It all happened long ago, in a small little settlement where a young man had just returned home from an exhausting hunt. Though having killed nothing eatable, spirits were high for this lad had found something remarkable.

Word traveled quickly within the village, everyone flocking about his kill with curious eyes. Murmured whispers filling the air, the lad pleasantly displayed the strange corpse to the crowd. An odd beast, seemingly a construct of sorts, with a stone-like exoskeleton midnight blue in coloration. It's joints exposed a deep purple, fleshy-like, material that bound everything together...like muscles of a sort.

All this wouldn't have brought forth such a commotion, there were plenty of artificial creatures roaming throughout Tyria. What created such a stir were the glowing, cobalt blue, inscriptions etched within its stone-like carapace.

Though pretty damaged, enough of the mysterious scripture could be read to see that it was a story about the goddess Dwayna herself...one that, until now, had never been known. Word continued to spread...like the plague.

Eventually, the young man was escorted to a temple to present his specimen to the Aspect of Dwayna. Things tend to get fairly vague from there...some claiming that the man was given an audience with the gods and then a special place within their service. Others...have a far more sinister theory on his ultimate fate. Either way, he was never seen nor heard from again.

Several days later, the Avatar of Truth presented herself and proclaimed the scripture a fabrication. She requested that any and all "pieces of lore", as they had come to be called, were brought forth to her personally so that the source of the deception could be found and put to an end. A great blessing would befall any of those who aided in this righteous endeavor.

So started the great hunt...

Appearance:

Though each Piece of Lore's general appearance differs dependent upon species, their overall look remains the same.

Each piece is composed, mostly, of a deep blue rock-like exoskeleton etched entirely with glowing cobalt blue inscriptions. The joints of these creatures expose a dark purple fleshy-like material that binds everything together. This appearance gives them a very ethereal beauty about them.

When slain, a cobalt blue mist rises from the corpses, as though a spiritual essence escapes the, seemingly, artificial corpse.

Rumors:

Some bold historians believe pieces of lore to be linked with the fallen god Abaddon. That when the maddened deity was destroyed...secrets he held coalesced into physical entities, roaming the Realm of Torment. In time, they found a means to escape into Tyria, confused lost remnants of a nearly forgotten god.

Fewer still believe them to be a sign of the dark god's resurrection. Either way, this select group of researches keep their blasphemous theories amongst themselves in fear of divine repercussions...if these inscriptions hold true...who knows what the gods would do to keep such secrets hidden.

Basics:

When you slay a Piece of Lore, a portion of it's husk can be salvaged. Upon these fragments are portions of lore, which can be combined with that of other fragments of the same story to complete it. These can then be crafted into special vanity armor that reflects the creatures themselves, and retains the lore.

You can also trade these pieces with other players, or give pieces to the Avatar of Truth in exchange for a powerful buff.

If you kill a Piece of Lore with a group, each contributing member can salvage a piece.

Collectors:

If you obtain a full story, several groups offer to craft these pieces into very beautiful armor, and weapons, that reflect the creatures themselves. Due to the extreme rarity of these pieces of lore, those who actually are able to obtain a full story to craft will hold quite the prize in their new vanity armor and weapon. The full story can still be read by viewing the various pieces of armor, and weapon, in your inventory...basically converting you into a really pretty book!

The Avatar of Truth will grant a special blessing to anyone who gives her a single piece, but will not create any armor from these relics. Such would be seen as blasphemy, due to the desire of the gods to obtain these items.

Rare Encounters:

To come across a Piece of Lore is extremely rare, and this is nott simply because of their rarity alone. While most simply wander the lands of Tyria, there are several other, unexpected, ways in which to encounter these elusive creatures.

  • Every piece of lore is randomly scattered across Tyria...roaming alone. You won't be able to judge where they might end up and you'll never see more than one at a single time.
  • Some pieces remain invisible until you enter into their direct range, like as the Oni demons in Factions.
  • Some are parasitic in nature, spawning only upon the death of their host...hidden up until that point.

Rarity Factor:

The extreme rarity of these elusive creatures is designed so that the eventual logging of every inscription into Wiki does not diminish the demand for each piece of lore. By increasing the rarity to such extreme levels, the duration it takes for wiki to obtain every inscription is lengthened, and the special armor that can be crafted from full story sets becomes even more of a collectors item...ensuring that the concept lives on well past the bane of wiki collecting all the stories told. It also permits people to sell pieces of lore for a significant profit, this is, quite simply, supply and demand at its finest.

In combination to such, the release of further secrets and lore in the form of these creatures, without telling the masses, will keep people guessing as to if there's something new out there to find. They will be drawn to hunting these creatures, not ever knowing if something new may have been implemented into the drops.

This then keeps the concept alive...indefinitely.

Truths:

The inscriptions written upon every piece of lore are true. It's not known why, exactly, the gods chose to state otherwise.

Some speculate that the gods did, indeed, tell the truth...that the first inscription was a lie, and the following truths discovered upon additional pieces were designed to set the gods up, thus sewing distrust. Many of your humans, especially the zealous, believe in this possibility.

Some speculate that the gods fear for the welfare of Tyria...and felt it best to lie so that the lesser races wouldn't be tempted to seek out these forbidden truths. That, perhaps, there are inscriptions that lead to terrible, dark, powers capable of destroying the world as we know it...perhaps the very cause of the Dragons themselves! Purely speculation, but the majority believe this to be the most justified explanation.

Some, however, believe that the gods are selfish...uncaring of the lesser races and desire only to hide these truths to avoid their weaknesses being exposed. The Charr, especially, believe in this concept...that the gods fear the lesser races overthrowing them, taking destiny and Tyria itself into their own hands...rather than leave it to fabricated gods hiding behind stolen power.
