Though I like the idea in principle, sadly this suggestion is too easily open to abuse. Let me illustrate:

Magog the Terrible challenges Newbert Newberson to a 1v1 match. Several other players place their bets that Magog the Terrible will win the round. However - to everyone's surprise - Newbert Newberson wins the round instead.

The reality is - unbeknownst to the naive gamblers - Magog the Terrible and Newbert Newberson are friends and/or in the same guild along with a shill (we'll call him Shifty McShifterstein) who bets on Newberson to win. When Newberson wins, all of the bets placed on Magog go to Shifty. Shifty then splits the winnings with Magog and Newbert.

Through repeated rounds of rigged 1v1 gladiator fights, Magog, Newberson, and Shifty get very, very rich.

As fun as it would be to bet on 1v1 gladiator fights, the reality is it's just too easy to set up a fight-fixing scheme as described above. Though you, personally, may bet honorably out of a motivation to see the best player win, the same ethics will not necessarily be held by all of your fellow gamers. It's just WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too easy to abuse such a system.

The moment you attach any kind of reward to a game of "chance", someone somewhere will rig it to their advantage. The only way to prevent such abuse in a game like GW2 would be to make the reward valueless outside of prestige. What I mean by this is the only reward would be the bragging rights associated with who has the highest kill:death ratios in 1v1 gladiatorial combat; no gold (or other in-game resource) can change hands. Of course, this defeats the purpose of your suggestion; which was to permit gambling on the outcome of these fights. Nice suggestion in theory, but falls flat when put into practice. In any equation, never forget to include the variable of human greed; sad but true. Guild Wars 3 perhaps 05:28, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
