If you want a dash of perspective, my aunt was playing Lord of the Rings Online once, and she said to me that she actually prefers Guild Wars as a game (I think she just wanted a change) but that she had noticed that LotRO players all tended to be nice than GW players. Is this because only nice people like Lord of the Rings? Or is there something deeper going on, like a broken rank system? Widowmaker 22:08, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

TBH I really don't think elitism is a problem. I'm currently rank 2 and getting fame fairly rapidly (5-20 a night) with randomway alone. That means just a few more nights and I'll have rank 3. The community as a whole has gotten a more level experience, so randomways will carry even sometimes horribly awful people into rank 3. Then once you have randomwayed enough you can form ranked groups. You cannot do anything other than "ways" with unranked groups because even 2 bad players can crush a more or less balanced group's performance. That is why there's rank descrimination: you cannot get low ranked people (unless you've randomwayed with them and know said rank 2 or less can actually play) to reliably play a build you've made. It's not necessarily even about winning, it's just if you have 2 mesmers, and you explain to them exactly what you want them to do, and they're both unranked, one or both has no clue what you're talking about. It's just not fun that way. Greep 09:06, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
I really do think elitism is a problem. A while back I was in HA, rank 2, and I'd succumbed and was building the latest FotM, for crying out loud, when a person who I added who was rank ~6 or something started asking me what rank I was, I said 2 and she not only left, she started slagging me off and being pretty damn horrible for no other reason. Now I don't care that much about what one idiot thinks, but if you're fairly new to HA or whatever and you suffer this, it doesn't send a good message. If I was a real newbie and had to deal with this I'd probably just log right back off again. This isn't the only time I've seen or experienced something like this, either.
That said, what you say about builds is true. It seems like people can only win by playing the current "way". If you don't you'll normally get rolled by it, because it makes up at least two thirds of the teams and is overpowered, or you'll get rolled by a balanced because the only people playing balanced are actually good people, who have to be to be able to beat the current gimmick. It's madness. Widowmaker 11:16, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
