In the scope of the MediaWiki software, a bot is a user account within the bot group. Bot accounts are typically used by computer programs which perform automated tasks on the wiki.
Requirements[edit]
As bot accounts have lower restriction than normal users and as their edits are hidden from recent changes by default, the following things are required when using the bot account, independently of the way the edits are done:
- Provide a way for all users to pause the bot (within 5 edits). A common way to do this is to check the talk page for new messages.
- Clearly state on the bot's user page that it is a bot and list the bot operator/owner and a description on how to pause the bot.
- Use the bot only for non-controversial or consensus-approved tasks and always be careful. The bot operator alone takes the full responsibility of all actions performed by a bot account.
Bot group[edit]
Although it is not prohibited to make multiple automated edits without being a member of the bot group, one should consider requesting bot membership for a secondary account on the admin noticeboard if one plans to continue. The decision is left to the bureaucrats.
