Trolls edit to get emotional attention. In order to do this, they try to anger, irritate or otherwise upset others. Raising to the bait is giving them exactly what they want. And in simple Pavlovian terms, rewarding behaviour is reinforcing behaviour. Given the we don't want trolling, this is undesirable.
