Maybe add a commented out reminder on the MediaWiki:Sitenotice page to do this whenever the notice is updated? --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 00:24, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I have no idea how to comment out something in MediaWiki:Sitenotice, though. Neither /* */ nor // seem to work, the content gets displayed anyways. I think I'll just add a note to the talk page of the sitenotice about it. --Dirigible 00:35, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
I think it's better in the talk page anyways, but here's some ways that could work:
World
--Rezyk 00:50, 20 July 2007 (UTC)
Just tried them: seems to do the trick just fine, which is good to know for future reference. On the other hand, World displays an empty line with the [Dismiss] button at the top of the page, which should probably be avoided.--Dirigible 02:50, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

We don't need to update this after blanking the sitenotice, right? --Rezyk 00:10, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Yep, think so. --Dirigible 00:35, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Purpose?[edit]

What is this actually for? I mean, I can guess that it's probably for telling people how many notices there have been (at least, that's my guess), but what's the purpose behind this? -- My Talk Lacky 03:31, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Changing this ID makes the sitenotice appear again for everyone, even those who have clicked "dismiss" on the last one. I'm nto sure how it works technically though. - anja talk 06:53, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
I see... -- My Talk Lacky 07:01, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Basically it works with a cookie; when you click dismiss, a cookie is added to your browser containing the sitenotice id. When you then access a page again, that cookie is read and the cookie is compared; if it is equal, the notice is not shown. poke | talk 09:40, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
Ahh, ok. Thanks Poke, and Anja, of course. -- My Talk Lacky 10:35, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
