I think this is a likely reference:

• The name is very similar (noted above).
• McCain was a PoW for just over 5 years; Cain was imprisoned for five years.
• I can't find a reference to him eating roots, but McCain was clearly malnourished as a PoW and has suffered lifelong medical issues as a result; Cain has lost his taste buds and much of his stomach lining.
