Talk:Gank
Does gank actually mean gang kill? I've never seen it used in that context, and can't find anything on dictionary.com or urbandictionary.com defining it as such.--Trevor Reznik 15:53, 12 February 2007 (PST)
- I see it defined as gang kill here (Answers.com, third paragraph) and here (Urban Dictionary, #3). --Dirigible 16:00, 12 February 2007 (PST)
- Originally gank did mean gang kill, mostly pertaining to a large group of experienced players pwning an unsuspecting smaller group (or a single character). Urban dictionary says it's from Ultima Online, I think I remember the term being used on text based MUDs prior to UO's existence. [1] Definition #7. In GW you can't actually gank in it's original meaning (as you can't run around ganking people in the PvE areas), so it's taken on a slightly different, more tactical meaning.
- That is my take on it anyway. Someone else might have different ideas.--Drekmonger 16:01, 12 February 2007 (PST)
- I would think a better definition in PvP would be to attack a target which is not capable of resisting an assault. To gank a base implies that you will be able to kill it easily. To gank a smaller group implies they are no match for you. To gank a flag runner (even with one man) implies the runner is vulnerable and unable to defend itself. Since one man can perform a "gank" on either a base or flag runner, a group attack doesn't seem to properly convey the meaning.--Fanha 17:41, 13 February 2007 (PST)
- I've never understood the use of the term gank in Guild Wars. However, since it is a commonly used term, and one that Guild Wars uses completely differently than the rest of the gaming community, we definitely need it defined here. I would recommend something to the effect of "Although in most online games, to gank means to kill a small group or individual by a much larger group, in Guild Wars ganking means...". Just a suggestion. VegJed 18:09, 13 February 2007 (PST)
- Agree.--Drekmonger 18:15, 13 February 2007 (PST)
- Agree with VegJed and suggest Fanha's definition of "..to attack a target which is not capable of resisting assault." Then perhaps add some examples such as powerplay situations, killing NPCs or the Guild Lord, or killing Flag runners. --Vindexus 08:57, 14 February 2007 (PST)
@Blastedt: I only suggested that you discuss changes of substance on PvP topics before making the change because you made an error of substance on another document. Twice in a row. No one ever said that you should ask for my specific permission. Any improvements to grammar, punctuation, spelling, broken links etc. are appreciated and obviously do not require discussion.--Drekmonger 18:24, 13 February 2007 (PST)
- @bitchsquad: You want to just revert everything I edit, you know you do, admit it. BlastedtGuildWiki page 18:26, 13 February 2007 (PST)
In the early days of Guild Wars, (prerelease) you would go and "gank" or "ninja" other team's priest in Tombs/HA. (this was on king of hill maps, and the 6 way tombs thing)... don't know if that helps anything. --Narcism 11:58, 14 February 2007 (PST)
- Oh yeah those where the days, back then as a joke when we did not have enough people for GVG I ran a team of 1-4 pali's template and we went by the name of Priest Ninjas :P, but yeah it's outdated, anything it could be for trivia or something. Arcad1a 12:45, 14 February 2007 (PST)
I like changes Narcism just made.--Drekmonger 16:09, 14 February 2007 (PST)
The number of guildhalls where base entrances can be bodyblocked by 2 or 3 characters are actually more numerous than those that cannot. I don't see why "catapult maps" or druids are that relevant, though the vinebridge block *is* perhaps the most notorious. -GreedyGus

Tutorial Video?[edit]
Can I add this video to see also section? It very well demonstrates the mechanic behind ganking. --Super Igor 14:25, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
Ban[edit]
Added that its a bannable offense as I've played with 2 people who have been banned for it under the "Match Fixing" rule. Reaper94 12:24, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

- I honestly wouldn't be surprised, but I'd like to hear more than one person saying that they heard this happened to a couple of their friends. is for Raine, etc. 19:46, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
- Content with doubtfull statement with no source should be in talk page only. You use "Match Fixing rule" with giving no reference, what is that ? anyone searching on wiki won't find it... so adding to lacking sources, it needs more information about what you refere to.

so as long it is a speculation and not a confirmed info that everyone should share, do you think it should appear on main page... Elephant 13:27, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
