UW spawning[edit]

Okay! I've never actually seen a phantom chest in the Underworld, even after all the hours ive spent in there. Whats the rarity of finding one of these chests? I'm starting to think im looking in the wrong Underworld :P Tyhpoon-wynn 11:10, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

i barely ever see them anymore mostly its only one in the middle of the ice wastes of course they only spawn in nm 127.0.0.1 11:23, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

I've just started going into UW, done it about 5 times (mainly for halloween quests) and I usually only see 1 chest each time. I actually came to this page wondering if they move/spawn during a run. Sounds crazy but this time I got a key in the Twin Serpet Mountains so I was looking out for a chest. I remembered there was one near the entrance to the Bone Pits last time so I went there. No chest. Killed a few Banished Dream Riders and their spawns, turned around and there was a chest right by the path back to Twin Serpet Mountains. I'm pretty sure I can't have missed it because I was checking all around me (holding down Ctrl+Alt and spinning the camera). Unlikely I know but for now that's my theory - they spawn randomly during the run instead of all at the begining. 109.151.89.145 10:31, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Usually the amount of chests that spawns in an area depends on how many players there are, heroes and hencies do not count. --MageUser MageMontu sig.pngMontu 11:07, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
At least outside of UW, the number of chests that spawn has nothing to do with the number of players in the party...or even the size of the party. Chests have a chance to spawn anywhere within a certain radius of certain spots; some of the potential spawn locations are off the map (so you won't see a chest). There's no way to test directly, but I'm reasonably sure it's also possible that chests don't always appear in all of these potential loci (we know, for example, they won't appear close to a portal or other party-spawning location).
The most obvious confirmation of this is the popular chest-running Ice Cliff Chasms: solo players see 1, 2, or 3 chests; full parties see the same. (There's a lot less data on # of chests for 2+ player/hero teams, but there's no evidence that 2+ chests appears with greater frequency for them). I've also done limited testing for other areas where I'm reasonably sure of the potential spawn locations and solo toons see just as many chests as do full parties.
I presume that the chest-spawning mechanics for UW is the same as everywhere else, but I don't visit there often enough. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:02, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
