Similarities[edit]

This page, especially the Tactics section is way too similar to guildwiki's page on the mission [1]. We should try to at least rework it to make it original. I'm getting ready to do the mission for the first time, so I'll see what I can do after that. Kami No Kei 18:23, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Not dropping hero armor?[edit]

Did this for the first time just now, got well over 100 points and none of my party got any armor. Am I doing something wrong? 68.225.201.96 00:06, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm having the same problem too. I've done this mission several dozen times since GWEN preview event. I was able to get 4 the first week after but since I have no rewards, even though my score is consistently 160-260.72.243.205.50 00:49, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Scored 121 points and got nothing. Vezz 18:14, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm having the same problem. What gives, ANet? --Mme. Donelle 01:46, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

I did this many times in a row without a drop, then suddenly one day boom: two drops in one run. Good luck guys! (This challenge mission seems to be the tough one when it comes to armor drops...) - Thulsey Zheng - talk 01:53, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
So you only have a chance of getting a drop every 100 points? Bah. --Mme. Donelle 15:24, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
Also the more armor pieces that character gets, the less likely they are to drop. So it's not too hard to get enough to upgrade all of your heroes, but it's progressively more difficult to farm them. - User HeWhoIsPale sig.PNG HeWhoIsPale 15:36, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Okay, I think the 100 points thing is wrong. My party just wiped at 97 points, and I was in the middle of cursing at being so close to 100 when I noticed a Mysterious Armor Remnant in my inventory. I think it's actually the death of each Portal Mage that rewards drops, but that they drop so rarely people assume it must be at 100 points. --Mme. Donelle 23:40, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Ah, this is interesting -- I got another armour piece, at 97 points again. Perhaps the're rewarded near 100? --Mme. Donelle 03:15, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Armor drop rate is horrible. --Life Infusion «T» 03:51, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

first time i did this mission i got a remnant at 20 kills or so--Scorpios 16:56, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure the drops are random. I got 318 and only got 1 remnant and a friend of mine got like 140 points and got 3 armor pieces. Just random.--QuePedito 02:30, 13 March 2009

They drop from Portal Mages. Now be quiet ;) Paddymew 15:15, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

well i've been at it, putting down portal mages for about 3 hours now, and not a single armor piece placed in my inv. this is so much fun! /sarcasm 114.156.202.48 15:06, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Ryoko

Score: 71[edit]

I've got an Mysterious Armor Piece with a score of 71.. So the information provided on this article is not 100% right because 71 isnt really near 100 :P. --Vectrox 19:57, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

I always thought it was just random when killing a Portal Mage and had nothing to do with score. --Doll 20:01, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
It definitely doesn't have anything to do with the score, which makes sense, as neither do the other challenges. It's just a chance everytime you kill a mage portal, like how the others have a chance after killing a guild lord/mad soul. I've definitely had a much harder chance getting these ones though, it's becoming very tedious. They need to make it the same as Eye of the North, or at least give us a double drop rate weekend.172.141.193.92 13:55, 10 January 2008 (UTC)
Strange. I've gotten more Mysterious Armor Pieces (and faster too) than the armor pieces in Remains/Inlet. Paddymew 15:13, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

I have redirected The Shadow Nexus (explorable area) here because this mission has no explorable area. Shard 01:53, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

DIRECTIONS PLEASE![edit]

i have a few of the armor peices that i bought because i thought they were primeval or something else. after looking at them and trying to redeem them where ithought they belonged (the remains mission) i found i had to go somewhere in the realm of madness to find the outpost where to use them. i want to use them on my olias and zenmai heros. but i need directions where to go to find the outpost (seeing as theres not a map of portals and whatnot showing you how to get to this town, mission, outpost, whatever) can ne1 tell me where i should start from and what direction to go? or better yet. PM me in game and guide me there? IGN - briar rosethorn.68.166.219.88 06:23, 20 April 2009 (UTC)Briar

Is it Completely Random?[edit]

I have been doing all of the mission like this in nightfall to get all sets of armour for my heros and it seems to me that you get nothing when under 50 points no matter how many times I do it. Not until my score goes over 50 do I seem to have the chance of getting a Remnant. Does anyone else notice this also? Cinnamongod 15:56, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Principles behind drop rate[edit]

Here are a set of rules that I think summarizes the drop rate of mysterious armor pieces. 1. You have a chance to obtain a piece every time you kill a portal mage. 2. The probability increases as your score increases (in your current instance). 3. The probability decreases the more pieces you have already gotten on a character (not account based). I do not claim to know anything about the nature of the functions relating chance, score, and pieces obtained, but qualitatively these rules seem to be true. - written by Laus Praeteritus

I agree with 1, but I do not agree with 2 and agree to an extend to 3. I don't think you have more chance of having a drop the more your score increase(disregarding the fact that more score = more mage kills = more chance to get drops) as I did a score of 310 which was the daily best but did not receive a single drop and did 200 later and got 1 piece. I don't know about 3 because it does seem like a received a lot of drops the first time I tried(2 drops with 160pts) but it could have been luck so we can't really know. KirKill 17:26, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
I don't agree with your disagreement. There is cleary something going on more than just randomness. While my sample size is only 3 chars, It went exactly the same with all of them. You start out, if you clear 50, you're highly likely to get a piece. The more pieces you get, the higher your initial score seems to have to be before another piece can drop. I believe the cutoff is set during start of the mish, so if you do well (and get lucky on drops), you can score 2-3 in one run. at which point the initial score goes high enough that many people don't see a piece again, or not until that rare game they do really well. I went 17 games one night without breaking 200 before I adjusted my build, and sure enough, both times I beat 200, within the next 5-6 kills I got a piece. It's clearly more than just randomness. I would say I've got about 100 games in on 3 accounts to suggest that my sample size is enough to rule that out. --Projectmercy 01:56, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Scoring Change?[edit]

Has the scoring for this changed? I just did it, and was only getting 10 points per portal mage killed, not 25 like the page states. This was normal mode, but I also tried hard mode and also got 10 points/portal mage. --Solvar 06:32, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Are you talking about lightbringer points? There's a straight-up conflict on the page between 10 and 25 in that regard, so if you know what's what, fix it please :) --Sahjiarah 22:21, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
I fixed the conflict and added the fact that you gain bonus Lightbringer points if you get a best score.(Best daily gives 500 LB points) I do not know how much the best monthly and quarterly gives but I assume its the same as the gold bonus as it was the same for the daily. KirKill 17:26, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure, either, but I've killed at least a thousand mages in the last three days, but have not even one armor to show for it.
I sure wish someone at ANet would confirm or deny the hypothesis that the odds go down after you receive a few. That would seem to be a major shortcoming in this (mini) game. What's the point of having a high score table when you receive zilch for getting on it (unless you reach number 1). At least the armor made it interesting. I'm finally getting good at this, and it seems I can never again get a reward for playing it. Kind of puts a sour taste in my mouth. I am SICK of arbitrary limits just for the sake of having them. Daddicus 02:12, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Are you sure you have zero? They do get added to the inventory directly.. also after you receive 5 armor remnants, the chances of receiving any other declines rapidly. (for the record today I got 2 armors for a 190 score - triple aggroed 3 boss mobs :p ) File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 11:10, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Pretty sure, although the 1000 might have been an exaggeration. But, I got good enough to score 180-200 pretty regularly, yet didn't get any. So, I think the hypothesis of a big drop-off is correct. Why they would do that, I cannot fathom. I have zero incentive to keep playing it. Why did they bother to make it in the first place if people weren't allowed to get better at it without penalty?
(I'm not asking you; just venting.) Daddicus 00:25, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Time of day?[edit]

Do we know what time(s) of day the leader board changes? Daddicus 16:22, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Hard mode?[edit]

Hypothesis: Is it possible that in order to get a decent drop rate for armors, that you have to be in hard mode after a certain number of times? Daddicus 18:58, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
