Pointing[edit]
- → moved from User talk:Tennessee Ernie Ford#Research template
Now it points to the wrong talk page from the template page. -- Kirbman 20:30, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
- it doesn't really matter to where it points on the template page itself, since, like most templates, it's not meant to be used in the template namespace. We could fix it by using a switch to determine which space the template is being used in and return an error if it's not MainSpace...or force it to point to the talk of whatever page it's used on. But, since we don't do that for other templates, I think it's unnecessary.
- I did re-code the template so that it would be more easily edited, should anyone desire; that's also consistent with other templates in use here. Unless someone was paying close attention, it wasn't obvious that it required copying/pasting text from the actual template to the for-display-only section. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:41, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yes it's easier to edit now, but I wanted to avoid two things: Adding the talk page of a page that doesn't exist to Special:WantedPages, and making it look like the template's link points to the wrong page (possibly causing people who don't know what they're doing to break it by trying to fix it). Also, why did you switch the includeonly tags for noinclude tags? The only functional difference I see from that is that it now includes the break line at the end. -- Kirbman 20:51, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
- We could solve the latter issue by adding a note in usage, I'm not sure how to phrase it though. -- Kirbman 21:00, 10 October 2011 (UTC)
- I followed the format used by {{bug}}. We can solve the talk page problem either by the use of a #switch or by using something like a {{Not orphaned}} tag on the relevant page. (that one is for images, but we should probably have one for things that are non-orphaned by templates and the like)
- There's a lot of ways to resolve the issue, but kludging the actual template seems like the one most likely to result in additional problems, especially since some people tend to create templates using existing examples, especially those recently created by people (such as yourself) who have demonstrated wiki-skillz. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 00:31, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
- Let's just leave it for now, we don't want to confound the code just for the template page. The guideline saying that we need to display it here is the problem. For cases like this it would probably be better if we could just link to a typical usage of it (or WhatLinksHere) instead. -- Kirbman 16:36, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
