About the Bot[edit]

Introduction[edit]

This bot is inactive, and will not run unless a sudden wiki-wide consensus is reached allowing it. If this ever happens, feel free to let me know ;)

ArchiveBot is a bot designed for the automatic archiving of talk pages. Archiving is the process of moving old sections of a talk page to a separate page, so that the current discussion is not interfered with. On busy talk pages this can become a chore; ArchiveBot helps with this problem.

Using the Bot[edit]

ArchiveBot can be told to archive any user, or article talk page. To tell ArchiveBot to archive a page, simply add {{User:ArchiveBot/Archive}} to the top of the page in question.

ArchiveBot will then proceed to archive all sections of the talk page that have not had an edit made to them for 3 days to the month of the last edit. For example, if the last edit was made on 13th September 2007, and it is now the 18th September 2007, ArchiveBot will move that section to User_talk:YourUserName/September 2007.

Help, Problems & Suggestions[edit]

If you have any problems using the bot, please leave a message on its talk page.

User Shutdown[edit]

If you are not an administrator, you can shut the bot down in an emergency by blanking this page.

Detailed Control[edit]

If the default settings do not suit the page you want archiving, you can override them by placing archive-tags on your page. The following tags are available (these should be copied and pasted to the relevant place, then the value modified).

  • <!-- <archivetime>72</archivetime> -->
  • Replace '72' with the number of hours old a section must be before it is archived.
  • You should place this tag near the top of the page, before the first section header.
  • <!-- <archiveto_global>Archive 3</archiveto_global> -->
  • Replace 'Archive 3' with the subpage that you want archived sections to be moved to (unless overridden, see below).
  • Using this tag, you can tell the bot to archive pages to 'Archive 1', 'Archive 2', 'Archive 3' and so on, to match your current scheme. You should place this tag near the top of the page, before the first section header.
  • <!-- <archiveto_section>Chat Archives</archiveto_section> -->
  • Replace 'Chat Archives' with the subpage that you want this section to be moved to, when it is archived.
  • Using this tag, you can override both the default and global archive locations to put the section in a specific place. This tag is useful if you want to sort sections into archives based on the same topic. You should place this tag in the section you want it to effect, just under the section header.
  • <!-- <noarchive_section> -->
  • You should not edit this tag.
  • Using this tag, you can prevent a section from being archived, full stop. This is useful if a discussion is unlikely to have anything added to it for a while, but you want it to remain on the page. When you have finished with the section, remove it and it will be archived as normal. You should place this tag in the section you want it to effect, just under the section header.
