Guild Wars 2 promises inventions in game design that should prove revolutionary. But I wonder where the limit lays. Because the cause and effect, the cascading of events, the winning or losing against the non-friendly npc, … are all fantastic. But there is only one end boss, Zhaitan. So what happens when he is defeated? The logical answer is that if the player defeats Zhaitan, he/she has won the game. Further progress is not really possible, but you can make another character and start a different play through. The game dynamics will ensure that your gaming experience is significantly different. But in the end, you will again defeat Zhaitan. That would already be a very good game, with decent replayability. But I think we can go beyond, and make GuildWars2 truly revolutionary, a game of games.
I envision that in order to defeat Zhaitan, all the players above a certain level will have to combine their strength. To protect the lands of Tyria, the players progress through the game by saving the friendly NPC from the non-friendly NPC. But they will also progress to the borders of Tyria, opposite the risen empire of Orr. Form a foothold on the shores to attempt to hold back the Elder Dragons and their minions. To turn the tide and claim strongholds on the empire of Orr. Tear down the defenses. And off course the battle evolvement go’s back and forth, because Zhaitan could also win. So everyone strong enough really has to be on this battleground to succeed. And eventually the players on the server all join forces to defeat Zhaitan. And once he’s defeated the threat of the Elder Dragons is gone, this story line is finished on the server. But although the Elder Dragons are defeated, the game doesn’t stop. Because this victory allowed the other non-friendly npc to largely destroy the land. Tyria is in ruin. The players have to fight to claim back the lands. And once that is done, rebuilding is possible. And when the land is rebuild, the higher level characters take the change to retire. But then some fool somewhere breaks an ancient seal and revives a god of the death. Tyria once again has to fight for survival. The sons and daughters of the hero's rise and a new volume in the game has started.
That way, the actions of the players can really change everything and the game can go on and evolve endlessly. A game of games.
