I don't post here really (and I will not be answering any replies, so feel free to flame hard). To those who say this game is balanced I would say:
- Splinter weapon. Still stupid @ VOD.
- BSurge is a skill that should have never been created. (if anyone says, Diversion is the counter, you are a moron)
- Shield of Regen. Kills the majority of split gameplay and has way too low a recharge.
- Hexes/hex removal still screwy.
- Shadow of Haste? (Ok, fixed/killed) Recall? Return? wtf???
Today, the game definitely has better balance than in past but it only takes 1 splinter weapon and NPC raping at VOD to wreck everything. I still think watching a derv enter god mode (Melandru Form) and AOE-kill every NPC in a ball at VOD is a total joke. I'm sure vD and many others would argue it is great player skill. Maybe knowing how the NPCs walk out/balling them up and met showering/derv killing them is really championship player skill. I think it's shitty gameplay, but to each his own, I guess. (and yes I know vD are awesome players... I am not questioning their player skill, just balance/mechanics).
I would argue that:
1. Obsessing over specific game balance is a waste of time and eventually becomes very subjective. Izzy is not stupid. The game will never be perfect. ATs help balance/prevent gimmick way (a tiny bit). Playing hex gimmickway vs. hex gimmickway or 'balanced w/ a derv to wipe your npcs at vod" vs. 'balanced w/ a derv to wipe your npcs at vod'.... seems like a waste of time to me. I personally think the only fair and skill demanding game is sealed deck play. I'm sure some unknowledgeable fool will complain about gimped bars in sealed play, but that's what I think is the most demanding in terms of total player skill (build making and playing), while eliminating nearly all balance problems.
2. Any perfectly balanced game doesn't mean shit, anyway -- even if it 'brings back' a handful of previously experienced players. This game is not designed for easy use and play by casual players. The GvG community in GW has always been a very select group of a few hundred players. There is no community or thriving competition except amongst a handful of guilds/people (I would also argue there never was really). You need to spend hours unlocking/dealing with guilds/learning skill combos to really get anywhere.
Are there 50-100 premade PvP chars (BA ranger, cripshot, bha ranger, LOD Monk, RC Prot Monk, etc.) at login? Can you enter a district and immediately pug-gvg in 5-10 mins? Is there a great tutorial that shows common defensive and offensive strategies (other than obs. mode)? Will the playerbase of a tired, 2-year old game really suddenly rejuvenate???
3. This PvP game is more or less on life support @ Anet. They are not investing in it, period. Other than enjoying the game for what it is now, it seems to me to be a complete waste of time for anyone else to invest energies into trying to 'fix' or "bring back' the game -- cuz Anet doesn't really care itself. GW 1 PvP is a lost cause. They have pulled the plug (see PvE lovefest=GW:EN) and are focused on getting PvP right in GW2.
See you in 2009 (perhaps).
