Ironman Challenge[edit]

The Ironman challenge is a player-run challenge in which players must go through the game while following a strict rule set that adheres to the philosophy of self-sufficiency and which emulates the "old school" experience by utilizing rule variants that gate progression.

The Rules[edit]

Over the years there have been many versions of the Ironman Challenge, with many different rulesets. It is worth noting that the rules are seen as guidelines and players like to create their own variants of the Ironman Challenge to suit their own aims and reasons for playing such as nostalgia or pure difficulty.

2019/Doom Box variant rules[edit]

There are different levels of this version of Ironman, each with their own difficulty and challenge.

Standard version:

  • No Player to Player trading (including drop trading) (Optional: Players may trade items in a group as long as they are still in the zone the item dropped, and the item has not been equipped/used)
  • No bank or material storage (The intent is not pulling gear/materials another character obtained, thus a variant is to allow storage use provided it is kept clean as there are many sets and things to obtain in GW)
  • Must play through campaigns in order (Prophecies -> Factions -> Nightfall -> Eye of the North)
  • If content wasn't available at the time of release of the campaign, The player cannot use it e.g. obtaining/using M.O.X. during the Prophecies portion
  • Can only use skills after unlocking them on the character (As opposed to account unlocked). Skills must be obtained from area skill trainers and skill quests. Cannot purchase skills from trainers that have (Unlocked) next to their name, unless that skill would otherwise be normally purchasable from that trainer i.e. The player may purchase Resurrection Signet from Sir Bertran even if it says (Unlocked)
  • No skill tomes
  • No consumables (Cons, Pcons, summoning stones etc)
  • Can only party with other Iron Man Characters
  • No Mercenary heroes
  • No /bonus items
  • No Zaishen Menagerie for ranger characters
  • HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - The player should have Iron in their character name for increased visibility and clarity for other players
  • OPTIONAL - Each player cannot have more than 3 heroes at a time

Ultimate Iron Man:

  • All regular iron man restrictions
  • Cannot use the material or Rare Material Traders
  • Cannot use Rune Traders
  • Cannot craft weapons from weaponsmiths

Hardcore Iron Man/Hardcore Ultimate Iron Man:

  • All iron man restrictions from Regular or Ultimate
  • Perma Death - If the character dies at any point, delete the character

Additional Rules[edit]

Whilst not part of the Doom Box rule set, players may consider to include the following rules to vary the difficulty of the challenge:

  • Each campaign requires a new character until the point where 'foreign' characters would join the story at which point players may instead choose to use their previous character
  • All quests must be completed in a region before moving on in the story
  • All bonus objectives must be completed in a mission before proceeding
  • No end of campaign weapons or no unique items at all
  • Hardcore Ultimate Iron Man characters may be permitted to die only after achieving Legendary Survivor or completing all campaigns
  • A brand new account of Guild Wars is used
  • Only allowed to purchase Signet of Capture
  • Players must complete the Beyond quest lines

Notes[edit]

  • While the original idea has been claimed to have been made by multiple different people and similar challenges have been made in other games, the modern Guild Wars popularisation was triggered by a video released from a YouTuber named Doom Box.
