  • Analysis

Lingering Curse and Suffering are nearly functionally identical. They share the same skills costs and have a very similar effect in AoE degeneration. However, Lingering Curse gains the added benefit of a 20% healing reduction that is also applied to its targets. In pressure scenarios, this reduction of healing is quite dangerous as it demands that enemy healers spend more energy to counter incoming damage than would otherwise be needed. Now, it should be noted that Lingering Curse is one of only two abilities which cause AoE healing reduction, the other being Predatory Season which has a disadvantage in that it affects the users team as well. Other forms of healing reduction, like Defile Flesh, are single target only. Therefore, the justification for Linger Curse being elite rests primarily on the fact that it is a multi target way to reduce enemy healing.

I am not sure how to best format this page in order to relay the information I wish to discover and share. What this page will primarily explore is how Arenanet balances elite versus non-elite skills and what the respective levels of power are between them.

Because these skill comparisons are between skills which have direct counterparts (elite and non-elite), it allows us to more accurately gauge the balancing standard between elites and non-elites
