Why a wintergreen spear?[edit]

*Elitist matter alert*

  • A regular pvp customized spear (or any other PvE customized one) will deal less damage than a customized Wintergreen Spear with 0 Spear Mastery.
  • The more armor the target has, the less the difference between a regular spear and a wintergreen one will show up.

In critical situations where a target has a ridiculously low amount of health and for whatever reason (flail, bodyblock, snares) you cannot finish it with your melee weapon, switching to your spear set and attempting to finish it off (longbow if needed although I never had to use this one honestly) with spear hits can pay off. For me, it has paid off a few times in my PvP experiences, hence why I am writing this little page.

Test Results[edit]

I made some tests to prove the fact that Wintergreen spears are better at doing damage than regular spears on top of the fact they are as customizable. I played with 14 strength (which I typically play with on hammer) and speared the master of damage during 3 minutes. Wintergreen spear is customized with a +15% damage mod and pvp spear is customized with the same mods;

  • Against the master of damage (60 armor), the pvp spear did 395 damage over 3 minutes whereas the wintergreen did 600. Critical hits from the the regular spear scored 6 whereas wintergreen's ones scored 7.
  • Against a suit of 80 armor, the regular spear scored damage values of 2, 3 and 4 (critical hit) whereas wintergreen's were 3 and 5 (critical).
  • Against a suit of 100 armor, the regular spear scored damage values of 1, 2 and 3(critical) whereas wintergreen's were 2 and 3(critical).

Conclusion[edit]

Although the testing is incomplete, we can easily observe that the Wintergreen spear deals better damage to low to medium-armored targets especially on criticals. However, against heavy-armored targets, the difference becomes thinner and eventually disappears as the armor values get higher (100+). As a matter of fact, a vampiric spear will have a better usage when spearing very low targets although you probably won't have the time to equip it from your inventory when the opportunity arises unless you really have a weapon set to waste for it.

If anyone ever bothers[edit]

If playing on a W/P with Wild Throw, I wonder if a low req (req3...spare points) spear could deal better damage than a Wintergreen.
