Purpose of this page

I have created this page to have one location for both sides of this discussion to state their views either for or against allowing extra information in user tags being posted in the wiki discussion pages. Please post your opinion, and include any links you have to substantiate your argument. Please keep the specific original comments in the appropriate area. If responding to someone else's comment, but your point is for the other side, reference in your comment the user and specific item in your comment.

Recommendations for allowing the use of small portions of quotes in signature tags

1. My recommendation is for this to be allowed, within reason. As the current guidelines state, my current signature tag, I believe, is within the acceptable guidelines, as per http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Wiki:Sign_your_comments#The_purpose_of_signatures and http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_Wiki:Sign_your_comments#Customizing_your_signature . My tag does not violate any of the stated policies with the possible exception of some individuals believing it to be "disruptive". I have other thoughts on this, and will address them, specifically in the section (recommendtations against personalisation - number #1) for that. My tag does not contain any markup tags, and is less than one line (approximately one-half of a line) in visual, and in edit window size.

My argument is that in intent, these talk pages are mini-forums, the specific topic of each determined by the associated article or user page. In some of the forums that I have been to, they do allow personalisation of signature tags, and even encourage it. It allows a person to make a comment in the space of the signature tag that they would otherwise have to repeatedly type for each comment they made, if they wanted to do so, and is not intended specifically to be something relevant to the discussion, but more relevant to the user making the post.

Recommendations for not allowing any kind of personalisation in signature tags

(This means no quotes, no markup tags, no icons, etc. Nothing but the user name.)

1. I recommend against personalisation here, only in regards to the overuse of tags which add to the edit view window amount and bulk of a user's tag. Some of these links are actually made up of multiple links to the same page. Many of these tags contain icons, and to be able to use them, a link to a picture file is needed, which necessarily takes up more physical space in the tag itself. Many of these multiple colour tags are visually obtrusive, and add unneeded additional markup text for the browser to have to process for each user that has such a tag. It adds nothing to the discussion itself, and often times, because of the complexity, does not even complete the required objective of linking to either the user's page or talk page, because the user didn't even realise they didn't include the link.

In respect to icons, following this point of view, the only people who should be allowed icons are the specific administrators of the game itself, or the wiki site. And any post by those individuals should automatically be tagged, so that there is no possibility of abuse by someone claiming to be an admin. This also clearly identifies someone to other users as such a person, without that person having to state in their post what their position is.

The downside to this is this doesn't allow any expression of the individualisation of a users tag, and could be viewed as too restrictive. I am actually for the personalisation of signature tags as stated in my vote for it, (number #1), and I am including this point of view to ensure a complete discussion of this subject.
