Indents on talk page[edit]
Remember to indent (using colons :
) one degree more than the post to which you are replying. Bullets (using *
) do not count as indents (although the do a similar job with the left margin). This makes it easier to follow the replies through a thread. If the indentation gets too severe, you can use {{ri}} to reset it (or {{subst:ri}}, which changes a template call into wikicode).
There are two viable philosophies about how to handle replies when someone has interjected a new idea in the middle: (1) keep on indenting relative to the most recent post or (2) only indent relative to the specific post to which you are replying. (2) is good because it requires no thinking to see who's replied to what, but I prefer (1) because (a) it requires no thinking to follow the overall thread progression and (b) less than half of everyone trying to follow (2) gets it right, whereas, nearly anyone can copy the colon-spam of the post before and +1 it.
There's no wiki law/guideline/policy (here or elsewhere) of which I'm aware that requires following this convention; it's just one of those things (like grammar or inline software documentation) which makes communication easier for the other person.
