Transclude or link

Considering that the amount of text dropped onto a talk page would be large, would you prefer using [[User:Tennessee Ernie Ford/Gaile sez]] instead? Or, were you hoping to apply this code directly onto a user's talk page, away from where the original question was asked? I like the spirit of this idea, but I'm unsure of how to properly use it in this form. And yes, I know you're still editing/formating the page. G R E E N E R 19:22, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

It's a good question. Probably, the ideal way would be to setup the template to have an option to transclude the single question/quote of interest and/or to setup each quote as a separately transcludable element, e.g. [[User:Tennessee Ernie Ford/Gaile sez/This, about farming]] and so forth. I've hesitated to get that fancy for two reasons: (1) it's a lot of work for something that probably won't get used often; (2) my wiki-fu is weak.

In the meantime, make use of this as you see fit — the idea is to make it easy to find relevant quotes so that (a) players can get answers fast and (b) Gaile herself can focus her time on issues that haven't yet been addressed.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:58, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

What if you approach it like this. Use User:Tennessee Ernie Ford/Gaile sez as a reference page, while User:Tennessee Ernie Ford/Gaile sez/1 and User:Tennessee Ernie Ford/Gaile sez/2 hold the actual quotes which can be accessed via {{User:Tennessee Ernie Ford/Gaile sez/1}} etc. On this main page, above each quote, just add the relevant transclusion code for that specific quote. Yeah, that would be simpler than what I had in mind.

The next time you're answering one of these FAQs, would you prefer to have {{subst:User:Tennessee Ernie Ford/Gaile sez/1}} as an option? Or is just easier to copy the wiki-code (e.g. by editing the page)? (For those unfamiliar with all things wiki, the subst: ends up replacing the template with the relevant quotes/sources, which is easier on the Wiki server and removes the dependency on a user page.)  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:15, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

If the quotes are accurate, then I would lean towards using subst, which would prevent any future modifications or purposeful misquotes via these pages (we won't necessarily be watching them closely in a couple of years' time. G R E E N E R 20:18, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
