In a BWE #3 video, a player is attempting to solve a numerical sequence presented by a Data Mining Golem standing ringside at one of the RC Golem Chess boards. The problem put to the player is:
- "Enter correct missing values for the following sequence: 0 1 1 2 4 7 13 24 44 ( ) 145 266 488 899 ( )."
The multiple choice answers are:
- 68, 1387
- 77, 1653
- 85, 1765
- 74, 1723
The player guesses the answer rather than attempting to solve it and chooses "77, 1653 ". This is accepted as the correct answer.
The sequence, up until the first missing number, adds the previous three numbers to arrive at the next number. For example:
- 0 + 1 + 1 = 2
- 1 + 1 + 2 = 4
- 1 + 2 + 4 = 7
- etc.
By the time the first missing number in the sequence is reached, the previous three numbers are:
- 13 + 24 + 44
Assuming the pattern of adding the previous three numbers together is adhered to, this should add up to "81 ". However, the answer that is being accepted is "77 ".
I'm not stating that this is necessarily in error. This is because through a combination of deductive reasoning
and using the next given number in the sequence - "145 " - a player can work backwards to arrive at "77 " as the first missing number. But it could be argued this may prove misleading and aggravating to players who have worked out the pattern of adding the three previous numbers together to arrive at the current number. Having the next number in the sequence following "13, 24, and 44 " equal "77 " rather than "81" breaks the pattern. Again, I'm not stating that this is wrong so much as a potential source of frustration for players. I don't know if this is intentional or not; but thought it was worth mentioning.
Following the same reasoning, the second missing number - "1653 " - is not adhering to the pattern described above, either. If it were, then the number should be "1705 " and the correct sequence for the entire number set would be:
- 0, 1, 1, 2, 4, 7, 13, 24, 44, (81), 149, 274, 504, 927, (1705)
Of course, I may be missing something here. Perhaps the golem - as part of the event to which it belongs - is malfunctioning. This would then account for the break in the pattern and why it needs to be reset to factory defaults to begin with.
Of course, the real answer is 42; but that's a discussion for another day.
