Hacked Account Relief Suggestions[edit]

In light of the recent rash of account hacks, and the sheer amount of stuff that was stolen, especially from veteran players who have spent the better part of 4-5 years building up their stash, I was wondering if it would be possible to set up some system whereby the rest of the community can donate gold and in-game items to those who have been hit by the RMT's and Gold Farmers. Naturally, we want to maintain the security of accounts, and we just don't want anybody coming up asking for donations. But I am hoping we can establish a way for players to come to the aid of those who have lost everything and have no means of re-building their inventory without starting completely from scratch.

What got me thinking on this is those "adopt a family" programs that start running this time of year. They refer to the family by a code, such as Family N37, and provide a wish list of things they need or want for the holiday. Naturally, safeguards should be in place to keep abuse at a minimum, so that we can be assured that whatever may be donated goes truly to those people who have been the victims of stolen accounts. which is where Anet needs to come in, as they will have the record keeping necessary to determine who should be allowed to partake of this system.

This could take the form of either an NPC who lists the affected players, like "Player N37", and a set amount of things the player lost that he would like to get back. Or perhaps a group of NPCs who act like the traders where players who are willing to donate merchandise and gold can go and those NPCs will act as a repository for those items/gold. The affected players can then receive an account key or some other type of flag on their account that lets them access the repository and re-acquire those things that the account had lost, based on what has thus been donated thus far.

So let's say a player's account was completely stripped. He can then receive a set number of in-game "Vouchers" by adding an access key to their account. These vouchers will allow them to obtain a set amount of gold and materials that will allow for the re-equipment of enough characters to enable that player to get those characters back into the game. Vouchers can also be used to re-acquire the rare and unique type items stolen from the account, either based upon donations of other players, or NPCs that will have a stock inventory of these items. Things I am thinking of are end game rewards, such as the Deldrimor Talisman and Amulet of the Mists, Gold and Green minis, Festival Items, etc. These vouchers would not allow the player to acquire anything that was not previously a part of the account inventory, nor to acquire more than was originally part of the inventory.
