Maximised Game Window in a Multi-Monitor environment[edit]

The one thing that got on my nerves slightly in Guild Wars was how it handled maximised game windows. The client was either windowed or fullscreen, which at first glance seems okay... exept for when you are using multiple monitors; when fullscreen it liked to 'trap' the mouse within the game window, meaning you had to either alt+tab or hit the windows key to be able to move the mouse to another monitor, which could occasionally cause problems. Until recently most games have used the same two options: windowed and fullscreen, however there are some newer games which offer three options: windowed, windowed-maximised and fullscreen. The difference between windowed-maximised and fullscreen being the ablility to freely move your mouse between the game window and the rest of your screen.

So you may be asking: "Why not use windowed mode?"; Although it seems trivial, the space taken up my the windowfame and titlebar is annoying and there is always a chance of accidentally clicking the close button at the top right. Windowed-maximised has no windowframe or titlebar so it is visually identical to a fullscreen application, without the drawback of your mouse being trapped.

It would be interesting to be able to use a secondary monitor to display in-game windows, though it may be 'gimmicky' and not very useful.

Drawbacks[edit]

  • There is a slight decrease in performance when using a game in windowed-maximised as opposed to fullscreen, though it is only very slight.
  • NVIDIA 3DVision and similar technologies do not work in windowed-maximised applications. (As far as I know)
Related note: a good thing to include would be being able to select which monitor wou want the client to go fullscreen on if you select the fullscreen or windowed-maximised options; currently most programs default to your primary monitor, which is not always what you want.

Summary[edit]

  • Current handling of multiple monitors in GW1 is poor.
  • Could be improved by:
    • adding 'windowed-maximised' to screen options. (no titlebar or windowframe, mouse allowed to 'escape' from window, visually identical to fullscreen.
    • adding option to select which monitor the game should maximise to when using fullscreen or windowed-maximised.
