I'd like to suggest a single, standard unified time system for the game.
Any internationally-spanning MMO covers multiple time zones. Players, especially friends and those in guilds, have to coordinate their play time in order to play together. This can be difficult and even confusing where players have to convert their local time to each other's time zones.
By establishing a single time system as if Guild Wars 2 itself had its own time zone, players can easily coordinate with each other even if they from opposite parts of the world. They will be using the same time, without need to calculate for time differences. I suggest that this single time be based on Coordinate Universal Time (UTC)/Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)/Zulu time so as to have a direct and real world reference for players.
In-world, this can be displayed not just through the player's user interface but also on game world objects and fixtures. Thanks to Asuran wizardry and Charr technology, it's not hard to imagine the advent of clocks and other mechanical timekeepers. Such devices would also add detail and depth to the world: city halls and town squares with clock towers; elaborate floating Asuran constructs for telling time like magical sculptures and installations; Sylvari plants that move, rise and fall according to the position of the sun and the moon; reveille and movement among NPCs to mark the time like a change of shift for guards; etc.
This system should easily fit the 2-hour day and night cycle (80 minutes day, 40 minute night).
