Feedback:User/Moxford/Free-for-all Servers

There exists a category of player who wishes to have an "open world" with regards to PvP. If you choose to play on such a "free for all" server then you desire to enter into a no-holds-barred contest. This means that you may be attacked at any time, anywhere, by anyone.

Various previous games have implemented such realms: Dark Castle MUD, Armageddon MUD, EverQuest's "Zek" servers, Ultima Online, Shadowbane and World of Warcraft to name a few.

Reasoning:

There is simply nothing else like leveling, advancing and fighting in a living, breathing and dangerous world. Your guild and your friends are your security. "Ganking" and "camping" happens. It is part of life. Call in your friends/guild and camp them right back. Simply browse the archived forums of many games, or even the nostalgia threads of World of Warcraft, where people reminisce of the epic battles. Do people remember, in World of Warcraft for example, Arena fights? Or Battleground fights? (Original 36-hour-plus Alterac Valley excluded) Or do they remember the back and forth brawls between Tarren Mill and Southshore? Do I remember "raid X in instance Y" of WoW? Or do I remember fighting EverQuest's Avatar of War on Sullon Zek, fighting off not just the PvE elements but the PvP components of 2 other teams? Do we remember "oh yeah, I ran through some bad guy town" or do we remember sneaking around, past guards and players ... trying to accomplish some quest even though the odds are stacked against us? We remember brawling, with one hunting companion named Harlo Trainbringa, deep into enemy territory, fighting all comers in the zone and knowing that death in EverQuest led to XP loss and, depending on the particular Zek-flavor you were on, item or coin loss to boot ... not "yeah, was played some Arena games last night. It was okay."

"Head on a swivel" is the mantra, and while yes, PvE can be fun nothing compares to the fun of open-world free-for-all PvP against a thinking human opponent. In every great story there is an antagonist. The epic battles between "Good and Evil"; the battles between the gankers and the anti-pk crews. Every time you log on you never know what, or who, you will be up against.

Many of us do not wish to play in a kiddie pool, wearing life jackets and bobbing happily in the calm. Some do; I can respect that choice, but it is not the choice I would like to be forced into. When the instanced battle is over and everyone picks up to go home for dinner, you might remember the other team. Maybe. But you will remember the your best friends and your best enemies. We, as humans, forget the mediocre and remember the best and worst. Do you remember every day of your vacation... or do you remember everything that went wrong? "Just another instanced battle" is similarly forgettable. The people you level with, your friends and the people you fight in the world on a daily basis, your enemies .. you will remember.

Please consider a few "open world PvP" servers. Guild Wars 2 looks to be simply amazing and having the ability to play on world-PvP (not WvsW) servers would be similarly amazing.

Thank you,
