Feedback:User/Nom/Cross-platform support

Currently, there's a small population who play GW on Mac or Linux via Codeweavers Crossover Games, a commercial WINE distribution. Can I recommend giving thought to either continuing or encouraging this for GW2?

Some salient points re Mac:

  • Although Mac market share is less than 10% (in the US), it is over 25% on some university campuses and the installed base is growing.
  • Modern Macs are all mid-high end machines with fully capable graphics cards. And Apple tends to focus on home users. Which means that a relatively high portion of Mac's sold are potential GW2 customers.
  • Mac market is much less saturated and generally favours higher-quality software. WoW is one of the few A-list MMOs with Mac support.

Don't know any numbers for Linux, nor for Mac outside US.

Working with (say) CodeWeavers / WINE to ensure compatibility, and maybe doing a cross-promotion (bundled GW2/Crossover games), could increase potential customer base by 20% with little extra development effort. And keep a bunch of existing customers happy. :)

(I'd also really love to see a cut-down GW/GW2 client for iPhone, but let's stick to stuff that doesn't require completely redisigning the client :) )

(looks like a very cut-down version of this is actually happening! Nom 13:00, 9 September 2010 (UTC))
