Appearance Customization Should Not Be Limitted Based On Class[edit]
It's my opinion that pigeon-holing someone's appearance based on their class is akin to pigeon-holing their playstyle and combat role based on their class as well.
In other words, after you select the Class/Profession for your character, your options for appearance customization within that class should be the same as the other classes, meaning full access to all hairstyles, scar patterns, tattoo patterns, and whatever else for your race.
If there's a really cool looking skull facepaint texture, and you want that on your warrior because you're going for a 'barbarian' look, the game shouldn't tell you "Too bad, we made that just for necromancers because we think that's how necromancers are supposed to look. Warriors can have this neat little target on their forehead, though. Isn't that cool?".
If I want to make a blonde haired, bubbly, bikini tan lined necromancer with a Marilyn Monroe haircut then dammit, I should be able to do that. :P Maybe I want my warrior to be a freckled 'ginger' and have the long flowing orange hair and my ranger to have the mohawk and the black widow tattoo on his shoulder. If I want to make an elementalist with battle scars on her face, the game shouldn't tell me "But that looks dumb. Fighters should have the scars, not casters, especially not chicks; chicks are supposed to be pretty and perfect. And no, you can't have that great big dragon tattoo wrapping around your left arm; that's only for thieves. Make a thief if you want that tattoo, noob". Anyway, you get the idea.
And for those who are already asking the obvious question, I'll say this. As far as keeping the classes unique enough in appearance that you can tell them apart on sight goes, first off I have to ask why that would be so important in the first place, and second, their armor art, animations and skill effects do a fine enough job of that already.
If I want my necro to be the 'princess' and my guardian to be the 'punk', I should have that freedom, and so should you.
Let the player choose the lore behind their character's appearance. Don't make that decision for them. After all, it's our story...
Other Appearance Thoughts[edit]
Hair, Skin, Eyes, and Tattoo colors should use a palette system like armor dye, not RGB sliders. It'll look really dumb to walk into Lion's Arch and see a bunch of 'humans' running around with pink, green and purple skin. I'd still like to have the option for crazy colors for hair, though, and tattoos are just ink...so maybe RGB sliders for something like that wouldn't be bad. But definitely not skin.
Female characters should have a breast slider(at least the races with breasts should). Or at least a "small, medium, or large" option(super-size for a dollar extra). Yes. I'm serious. Not about the super size part(we all know it's actually a dollar fifty). It may sound silly, but variable breast size is actually a part of what makes each female look unique. If every time I play a female character I have to be a top-heavy barbie doll I'm going to be seriously disappointed. I want to play Guild Wars 2, not Tomb Raider.
