With the reservation of player names via account registration in Guild Wars 1, the only current method of assuming you reserved name that I see would be to register your Guild Wars 2 account from the same email address.
While, all in all, this would be sufficient, there are many problems that arise from relying on this concept alone. Some of these include;
- Players have changed email addresses since they created their Guild Wars 1 account. They either;
- No longer utilize that email address.
- No longer know the login information.
- Upon purchasing Guild Wars, some individuals didn't see it as an appropriate game for them. Eventually, rather than wasting an access key (or, if you prefer, an account), such people occasionally gave their accounts away.
- There isn't any easy way to change an email address login.
- If already registered under an NCsoft master account, this cannot be changed. In some cases, NCsoft master accounts have been lost forever.
- Some more serious NCsoft support staff consider instances such as the one detailed above "account sharing", or "account theft". And, it is bannable.
If a player has lost their NCsoft master account, has changed emails, or is forced to login from another person's email account, they'd basically be screwed for Guild Wars 2.
Alternatives[edit]
Additional methods of confirming account ownership would be a blessing, removing many extra stresses that may arise in the future. Methods that are possible may include;
- An NPC in Guild Wars one that allows you to enter your login in Guild Wars 2, prompting account information entry and account linking once back in Guild Wars 2.
- A simple logging into Guild Wars 2, and then entering Guild Wars 1 login info.
- An easier way to reset NCsoft login information, an easier way to change one's NCsoft master account.
- An easier way to change what email address one uses to log into Guild Wars 1.
- Perhaps an entirely different method of logging into Guild Wars 2. Via "user name", rather than email. This may actually reduce hacking issues, too.
The list goes on, but basically the suggestion in a non-tl;dr (to long; didn't read) format- Make sure that in order to "link" Guild Wars 1 and 2 accounts, or confirm Guild Wars 1 account ownership, players do not have to make use of their current Guild Wars login email addresses.
