Naming rules and tips when creating a character[edit]

I would really like Guild Wars 2 to set a more serious standard for how naming is handled. Sure, it is the player who should be able to decide the name, but is that really for the best when the majority hates stupid names? The players who have such names are rarely taken seriously, and in other MMORPGs, I've seen several being left out in the cold because of their names. It's both bad for them and everyone else. When I talk about "stupid names" i mean this: - names with an added "X" or more, like: xGrenth Umbreon, Grenth Umbreonx, xGrenth Umbreonx, xXGrenth UmbreonXx etc. - names made of a sentence, acronyms or items, like: Likes Food, Ipwn Usohard, Lol Usux, Fried Rice etc. - names found in other games which are heavily abused in different variations, like: Legolas, Sephiroth, Sasuke, Naruto, Wolverine etc(this is only an issue if you allow a short name) - names with sexual, racist or offensive content - I was really disappointed with there being no punishment for players running around with extremely offensive names in Guild Wars. Please don't let that happen again!

To avoid this, one could simply implement a short message explaining the naming rules and reminding the player that to be taken seriously, he/she should try to come up with a serious and nice name. Another neat thing would be to add suggestions for names that follows the tradition of the respective race the player has selected. This worked really nice for Lord of the Rings Online.

Upon breaking the rules, a player should be warned and forced to change his/her name. If the name is offensive, the player can get a lock-out to show that this is something ArenaNet does not approve of. The player also gets a mail with the naming rules. If the player continues to make offensive names, the lock-out period is extended: - making one character with an offensive name: 2 days lock-out - making another character with an offensive name after the first lock-out: 4 days lock-out - 3rd character = 8 days, 4th character = 16 days etc.
