I think this is a good idea, but I don't think ANet is ever going to consider it for GW1 (although aspects of this are included in GW2). resolution = withdrawn.

Update the Friends List to support the way people actually play[edit]
- Introduce the Busy status, for people who are online, but can't respond quickly. (e.g. they might be killing foes, teaching a guildie, or typing an email with GW in the background).
- Change the Online status to Available, as distinct from Busy.
- Add the Associate or Acquaintance category to the list, for trade partners, folks to whom you promised a follow-up, and other types of relationships short of friendship.
- Make one's location available only to mutual friends and only if available or busy; it will not be shown to Associates nor when you are Away.
- Allow more names in the Friends, Associates, and Ignore categories. Put the limit on the total number of toon names rather than the individual categories.
Background[edit]
People need to be able to distinguish between being online and available versus being online and busy. Players also need to be able to distinguish between Friends (those with whom we have a substantive relationship) and acquaintances or associates (those with whom we have a transitory or less deep relationship). People also want more control over who gets to see more detailed information about their toons or accounts (whether that info is location, status, or progress within the game).
The current Friends list offers almost no tools:
- People report their status as Away whether they are truly away from the computer or just busy; it's the only status that allows a PM while reminding the sender that response time might be slow.
- People report their status as Online when they aren't really available to respond to PMs because they aren't Away.
- People might want a lot of the features that comes with a mutual status of Friends, but we list everyone that we want to PM on the friends list. Sometimes, we do this when we meet someone in a PUG and promised to send them a link later. Sometimes we have frequent trading partners. These are more than strangers, but less than friends.
- This isn't a question of nomenclature — changing the name of the list wouldn't be particularly helpful — it's a question of differences in types of relationships.
