Recognize existing guild structures[edit]

Make minor changes to allow existing guilds (especially those with presence in GW1) to speed up the transition to the new game. For example:

  • During head start and the first 24 hours of the official launch, allow anyone to form a guild immediately by borrowing two silvers (instead of paying 1 silver later on).
  • Similarly, allowing borrowing to pay for the first two size upgrades (owing 2 silver for 100 members and 20 silvers to increase to 200).
  • Allow a maximum size of 1,000 (even 750 would be better than 500). (However, 1,000 is the current alliance maximum in Guild Wars, from ten guilds of up to 100 members each).

Alternatives[edit]

Two other possibilities are:

  • Allow guilds to pay something in GW1 to reserve their guild name and have the guild be available immediately in GW2.
  • Allow guilds to use influence to pay to bust the cap. (e.g. 200 influence for each upgrade, since Guild Promoters already turn 10 silver into 10 influence — even though I'm sure that mechanism is supposed to work one-way, to serve as a gold sink).

If that's too complicated, make it free to create a guild of 200 members until the end of the first day.

Guild name reservations[edit]

(Thanks to Yoshida Keiji for reminding me of this.)

Provide a mechanism for Guild Leaders of GW1 Guilds to reserve their guild's name for Guild Wars 2.

  1. Many guilds have worked long and hard to develop a reputation in Guild Wars (for skillz, maturity, trolling or whatever)...and those reputations are now tied to the name. Other players are now able to, purposefully or accidentally, use those reputation-tied names.
  2. This would be an example of stellar customer service: it probably requires redeploying developer and QA resources to enable it in time for headstart and only a small fraction of players would be affected. However, those that are would be extremely appreciative.
  3. Currently, the low cost of creating a guild means that any small group of trolls can systematically try to out-earn and park guild names of the most famous and infamous guilds. If you can't enable guild name reservations, perhaps you can prevent players from creating more than 1 guild during the first week.

Background[edit]

The current guild setup system seem completely fair for Guild Wars 2 until we remember that GW1 guilds are already organized with hundreds of members. Any restriction on the initial setup makes it harder to make the transition and leads (unnecessarily) to hurt feelings (why was Fred invited first, but Wilma had to wait for the second tier upgrade?) and (equally unnecessary) logistics (ok, everyone send me every bronze you find until we can afford to pay for the next upgrade).

The reason for limiting the suggestion to just four days is that this only affects guilds that are already organizing for the the official launch. Any guild that is slowly moving members over or otherwise disorganized won't be handicapped by having to wait to earn coin.
