Water[edit]

I'm sure they'll get onto it, but the bit about being able to see downward into water but not up through it is realistic, try it yourself with a pool. For reasons I was too lazy to retain from basic physics classes, when you are underwater and look upward, all you can see is a circle that contains as far as your vision could naturally see. Imagine your vision being packed into a small circle, and surrounded by nothing, and that's what you get when you look up from still water. -- Tha Reckoning 14:34, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

The elementalist Water Trident video has very realistic water, actually. If you look at the very start of the video it actually has the reflections of the grass in it and while it pans up it's transparent. Ofcourse it's very clear water and not muddy water that is the problem here. But so then the water from the top is transparent. And it's very very hard to make realistic looking water. (Looking at lotro water videos like:[1] I would have to disagree on that that water looks nice actually. ANd flat? What are you talking about? xD COme to the Netherlands so you know what flat is xD. Depth of field blur = unrealistic, IMO or at least the most games that have that you feel like walking in constant mist. Im not sure if you're talking about gw1 or gw2 here. but gw2 has some blur just not fully blurred. as it should be. If you see a mountain in the distance irl it's not super blurry unless you look VERY far away :p True about the characters looking very distinct from the environment.. as if they don't belong there. Plants should move if realistic but in MMO's you can put in too much detail else the multiplayer effect fails. Most Multiplayer games are cutting on details in graphics I suppose. The engine doesn't seem to have dynamic lightning, I suppose the camp fire just has the lightning effect around it. But any fire skills I saw didn't have the dynamic lightning either. To add Dynamic lightning will need alot of power of your PC too. And they said they wouldn't make GW2 ask that much power from your PC. (Bad Idea from them if you ask me) ANd I hope with you that they might update the graphics after the game comes out. But good suggestions I would say although i dunno if it's all possible while letting the game run smoothly.(Frizz 18:13, 12 May 2010 (UTC))
Heya, good points! I just jumped into the pool here & when I look up, although I obviously can't see with the same clarity, I can still see up without everything instanly becoming cloudy. Obviously it depends on your depth, surroundings, light & water consistency too. Now I've also just jumped into the local pond which is reasonably clear looking down but once under gets darker & darker the deeper I go & less & less I can see up. It's just odd to be able to see to the bottom looking down but as soon as your under you can't see up at all. Obviously has to be a trade off in a game, so I'll concede that point.
I still think the water looks too lifeless though. Like I said with the weather effects, a random breeze or something is going to move the water. Maybe because its so transparent the water moving just isn't as obvious. I've no problem with the reflections (except spells/magic don't reflect). See this for what I would consider more realistic water. Not having played LOTRO I'm not sure if you can go under water so maybe that's why they can do that effect & not worry about this problem.
Also check this for good looking transparent water, granted its flowing not a pond.
In the elementalist trident vid I don't mind if it's muddy or not but it's just not responsive at all to the chars in it.
Depth Of Field Blur I think works well in cutscenes but obviously we haven't seen any yet. Your right about the mountains they don't really become blurry, but more hazy when your a distance from them which they appear to have done well, especially in the human city.
With the surfaces looking flat check this thats what all games should look like now its available. See 3 Min mark on trailer 1 (now look at the original EQ, aside from some more grass/flowers they are still flat angled surfaces. Check 34 - 39 Sec mark on trailer 2, arg, there are those flat textured surfaces again.
It's still a good looking game, but nowadays I really expect more from new release games. If this technology is there then why not use it.
Obviously theres a lot of programming involved in all these extra things but the game should still be scalable to work on low/high end pcs.

That looks cool, although sometimes still slightly too shiny :p I wonder if they can put it in without asking people to buy new pc's. And Yea the water looks pretty lifeless, but so it does in WoW ;P (but then I ventured where you usually don't go to.) A few more fish bubbles plants and such would make it alot nicer. Although I guess in general water actually is pretty lifeless. It Might be nice to make it blurry or hazier when looking up or down and have a further view looking sideways. That way you can still see where you go but going up or down will be more exciting. Of course near "overviews" of some particular underwater part it's better to leave the blurriness away since then you can't see that much. :p Unresponsiveness of water should be fixable I suppose. i Do agree with you[edit]

on the Bushes and Hair (Not the best way to say it ¬.¬) Characters Should in pheory of game mechanics be able to *Rusle* leaves and such, and Glued hair is...for the win.--Neil2250 , Render Lord User Neil2250 sig icon6.png 14:40, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
