I don't see how this can work. The years and every from what I think I'm gathering might be greatly different. I would look on the guild wars two website before really suggesting a lot with it. Ariyen 18:06, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Very little has been released on the Companion system at this time. Since the Companion system is a gameplay element, we'll have to wait until at least next year for the Guild Wars 2 website to have information on it.
As for the argument, it has it's strong and weak points. Strongest in it's favor is storage of the data, since such data would be drawn from the characters existing character. Weakest in favor, or strongest against, would be the assumptions that the access of that data of other characters while logged into another character would be easy. It could be made easy, but I can see how it could be very hard and somewhat buggy as well. It all depends what they already have in the code, and since they've been coding for two years now... that's a lot of possible things might not be easy to change at this point in time.
Personally I would prefer one customizable companion per character, and the rest be story rich characters. I loved some of the details in background some of the Heroes got in Nightfall and GWEN, and we can't really get that with the same level of interactivity with customizable companions. And while I can completely agree that being able to customize and control your companion's story and origin is enticing... we're not building a team, we're building a partner, so we really only need one to be under our control.
Just my two cents.--Ryan Galen 17:44, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
