Question[edit]

I asked Jon these questions and I feel they would help here as well:

Before I vote on your RfA, I have a (admittedly rather mean) set of questions for you.

  1. Out of all your edits here, which one do you regret most?
  2. Why do you regret it?
  3. What would you do differently today? --Xeeron 15:28, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
Hey Xeeron, these are very interesting questions. Two instances come to mind. I can't really decide which one applies most so I decided to list them both. The first one:
  • User talk:Ninjatek. This user violated NPA somewhere, calling another user an idiot. I pointed this out on his talk page, and he responded rather aggressively. I decided to back off and left a note on the admin noticeboard. [1]
  • I regret these actions because of two things, one, because I don't think I handled it well on his talk page, one clear warning would have been enough especially since an admin (poke) was already aware of the issue, and two, because I shouldn't have used the noticeboard as the sysop team was already aware and there was no policy breach on the talk page, which I had linked.
  • Well, I haven't been in a situation like this since then. What I'd do today (without the sysop tools) on a breach of NPA, if it concerns a user new to the wiki I'd give him or her a clear warning with a link to both the policy and the PA, if it concerns a user who has been active on the wiki for a longer period of time, I'd report him or her on the noticeboard without taking it to their talk page, as users familiar with the wiki are supposed to be familiar with its policies. Should I become a sysop I'd warn them if they're new and haven't made personal attacks before and block them if they're familiar with the wiki as they ought to know better than violate its policies. Of course, that's when dealing with the soft and average types of personal attacks. If the attack is real bad I probably would take it to the noticeboard (or apply a block should I have the sysop tools) whatever the experience of the user. If it's merely minor name-calling I'd probably only warn unless the user has a history of minor NPA violations already.
The second situation I'd like to point out is the prelude to the reconfirmation of Auron (link, I wouldn't read it all since most of it is irrelevant). I requested reconfirmation because of these [2] reasons, Auron responded and made some good points rebuking my arguments, and I decided to withdraw [3]. I'm not going to give an in-depth analysis of that situation as it has all been discussed and handled in the past and it's best to let old drama rest. My part in it was minor, but still, I regret not providing my reasons the moment I requested reconfirmation as it would've avoided some trouble. I didn't do this, because while (I believe) my action was rational, I didn't want to emotionally influence other people to join Auron's reconfirmation. When things did get all emotional later on I felt obliged to provide my reasons, and I now wish I had done so sooner. Should something like that occur today though I'd take it to the talk page to avoid unnecessary drama. At the time I wasn't nearly as confident as I am today. At present I fully support Auron's sysophood, though I don't regret doing that which I thought was the right thing.
I hope this helps in making your decision. Should you need additional information I'd be happy to provide it and if you find other controversial edits of mine (I could have missed something but I don't think I have) please point them out. WhyUser talk:Why 19:27, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
