Talk:Seasonal item

Who coined the term?[edit]

On GuildWiki we called them "special event items", in lack of a clear in-game term. But as of late we do have an ingame term precedence, the festival hat maker! So I would suggest to use "festival item" rather than "seasonal item". --Tetris L 08:34, 9 February 2007 (PST)

Well, the person that created the link on the main page (revision) was Emily Diehl (game designer). --Tometheus 08:53, 9 February 2007 (PST)
I agree with Tetris. I enquired to anet about another term that is used by the community, but doesn't have an in-game term - in the reply Gaile said (paraphrasing here) that we should choose the best suiting name (one that the community understands) and use that until someone comes up with something better. I believe "festival items" is the best we have - it's easily understandable and has in game precedent. Though they are also known in the community as "seasonal items" so you would need that mentioned in the article as an aka. There is nothing on any of the guildwars.com event pages about a name either. I'll check the update pages, and post here if I spot anything.
As for what was posted on the main page in that revision - Emily posted a number of links there that clash with terms used in published documentation (game manuals). We can always ask someone if needed though. - - BeXoR 09:05, 9 February 2007 (PST)
Gaile usually refers to things as 'seasonal' items. (Wish it was easier to search her chats. Can't someone start OCRing those logs?) Even when introducing the 'Festival Hat Maker' she said "The Festival Hat person will help you in this way. He will be able to copy your seasonal hats and share them with ALL the characters on your account." ref. I don't care either way what the page is called, I'm just saying that it seems to be a common way to refer to the items in the ANet offices. --Tometheus 09:24, 9 February 2007 (PST)
Whatever term we use, we should use it consistent! Right now, three different terms appear on the main page: "Special event", "Holyday" and "Seasonal [item]". I'd say "Special event" is the super-term, including "festivals" (Holydays, seasonal events) and other special events such as preview events, tournaments, double/tripple-fun-weekends, etc. --Tetris L 01:21, 13 February 2007 (PST)
Special event does seem more all-encompassing. - BeXoR 02:48, 13 February 2007 (PST)
I'm all for using super-terms :) I may be disappointed we can't call them "purple monkey dishwasher items", but I'll live. *dramatic sigh* (And with that I'll go back to lurking.) --Tometheus 05:00, 13 February 2007 (PST)
